Jaratkaru: An Untold Story of First Genocide of Aryawarta by Dr. Priya Dandage is a captivating narration which has explored an untrodden story from Indian Mythology. The book vividly revolves around the themes of responsibilities, sacrifices, vengeance, dutifulness. Jaratkaru is both intriguing and empowering. She is the epitome of love and sacrifice - not for a person but for her clan. She places responsibility before selfishness and ego.

Ancient Indian History has created epics such as  The Ramayan and The Mahabharat. From time immemorial, Indians have grown up listening to the stories of these legends. Ramanyan is known to instil in us the values of respect and sacrifice while Mahabharat teaches us the Ideals of life.

After reading "The Shiva Trilogy" and "Ramchandra Series" by Amish Tripathi, I was on the lookout for a similar historical read. Thanks to the author - Dr. Priya Dandage, I am totally mesmerized by her book - Jaratkaru - an untold story of first genocide of Aryawarta.

Naga King Takshaka vowed to avenge the inferno triggered by Arjuna. He poisoned Arjuna's grandson - Parikshit. Parikshit's son - Janmajeya swore to kill the entire Naga clan from Aryawarta. The book narrates these and many unknown incidences in a very captivating manner. The resultant conflicts see a future of extinction. At a point, where there seems no hope of saving the Naga clan, comes forward Jaratkaru - the princess and the sister of King Vasuki. The princess is deeply in love with Prabhasa. however, destiny and King Vasuki have planned something else for her.

What will Jaratkaru do now? Will she be able to forget the love of her life or will she be dutiful toward her clan and responsibilities?

The book is written in a very lucid and flowing language by Dr. Priya Dandage. The story is intertwined with many different characters and yet there is no thread which is left loose. The characters, the landscape and our ancient history has been marvellously depicted and narrated by the author.

Jaratkaru is a fascinating and thought provoking read which reiterates the adage - "With Great Power comes Great Responsibility."

मदर्स डे च्या निमित्ताने....

मदर्स डे च्या निमित्ताने.... 

ही पोस्ट मुद्दामच एक दिवस उशिराने टाकली आहे. कालच ( १४ मे) झालेल्या "मदर्स डे" ला खूप जणांचे लेख वाचले, स्टेटस बघितले. आपण कितीही मोठे झालो तरी ही ज्यांच्या अवती भोवती असताना, आपण आपले वय विसरतो ते आपले आई - बाबा. 

बहात्तर वर्षाची आई जेव्हा "बस, मस्त आलं घालून चहा करते" असं म्हणते, तेव्हा एक मन म्हणतं आई ला नको सांगू, तूच कर की चहा. तेव्हाच दुसरं मन सांगतं, आई दे तुझ्याच हातचा चहा! ह्या संदर्भात, गेल्या अनेक वर्षात व्यक्ती बदलली आहे, पण नातं तेच आहे. ए आई असो किंवा अहो आई असो; मला चहा करावाच लागत नाही.

मग मनात विचार आला, आईचीच मुलाखत घेतली तर... चहा पिता पिता... 

आई गं, तुला तू लहानपणची लक्ख आठवते की मी?

मीच मला जास्त आठवते. कारण तू आईकडे होतीस ती १२ वर्ष कमी आठवतेस.

तुझ्या लहानपणची एखादी चांगली आठवण जी तुझ्या मनात अजून घर करून आहे...

मला आठवणारी पहिली चांगली आठवण...
माझं सातवीपर्यंतचं शिक्षण मुंबई महापालिकेच्या शाळेत झालं. त्याकाळी महानगरपालिका सातवीपर्यंतच शिक्षण द्यायची. आठवी ते अकरावीसाठी खाजगी शाळेत जावं लागायचं. ६६ साली सातवीत असताना मी वक्तृत्व स्पर्धेत भाग घेतला होता व त्यात नंबर आला म्हणून पुढे आंतर् शालेय वक्तृत्व स्पर्धेत मला शाळेने धाडलं. त्याचा निकाल मला कळलाच नाही. आठवीत मी दहिसरातल्या आजच्या सुप्रसिद्ध विद्यामंदिर शाळेत प्रवेश घेतला.आठवीत असताना एकदा  महानगरपालिकेच्या शाळेतून मला 'शाळेत येऊन हेडमास्तरांना भेट' असा निरोप आला. माझी एकदम घाबरगुंडी उडाली. काय झालं आपल्या हातून काही समजेना. हेडमास्तरांना भेटले तेव्हा पाय अक्षरशः लटपटत होते, छातीत धडधडत होतं, घशाला कोरड पडली होती. आश्चर्य हे की हेडमास्तरांनी मला (वट्ट) ७ रुपये दिले आणि म्हणाले त्या आंतर् शालेय वक्तृत्व स्पर्धेत तुझा तिसरा नंबर आलाय..बक्षीसादाखल हे पैसे महानगरपालिकेने पाठवले आहेत. क्षणात भितीचं रुपांतर आनंदात झालं. हेडमास्तरांनी माझी पैसे मिळाल्याची सही घेतली. ते माझं आयुष्यातलं पहिलं बक्षीस. मग हेडमास्तरांनी विचारलं ह्या पैशांचं काय करणार....वाचनाची आवड असल्याने मी ताबडतोब सांगितलं...पुस्तकं घेणार. सात रुपयांत पुस्तक येतं की नाही हेही मला माहित नव्हतं, कळत नव्हतं. ते पैसे मी आईलाच दिले.  
वाचनाची आवड असल्याने तेव्हा मी दौलत, हत्या वगैरे पुस्तके वाचनालयातून आणून वाचली  होती. त्यामुळे मला पुस्तकं आणण्याचं पटकन सुचलं.
ही घटना मला अजून आठवते आणि मग 'पुस्तकं घेणार' हे  माझं बाणेदार उत्तर ऐकून समाधानाने हसलेले आमचे हेडमास्तर आठवतात.

तुला लहानपणीची तुझ्या अवती भोवतीची परिस्थिती आणि सद्यपरिस्थिती ह्यात काय फरक जाणवतो 

माझ्या लहानपणी सुरक्षित व निवांत आयुष्य  होतं. अभ्यासाचं ओझं नव्हतं. आईला घरकामात कसरत करावी लागत नव्हती, वडिलांना ऑफिसच्या कामाचा ताण नव्हता. आता आयुष्य फारच गतिमान झालं आहे. विद्यार्थ्यांना, गृहिणीला, नोकरी वा व्यवसाय करणाऱ्यांना उरस्फोड करावी लागते. एवढं करुन कसलाही निखळ आनंद मिळत नाही.

तुमच्या वेळचा तुझा एखादा आवडीचा खेळ

मला स्वतःला खेळाची आवड नाही. बाकी शाळेत असताना ज्या क्रीडास्पर्धा व्हायच्या त्या बघायला आवडायचं.

तुला वाचनाची प्रचंड आवड आहे हे तुझ्या कधी लक्षात आलं आणि तुझ्या लहानपणी काय पर्याय उपलब्ध होते?

वाचनाची आवड वाचायला यायला लागल्याबरोबर लागली.  लहानपणी मुंबई मराठी ग्रंथसंग्रहालय घराजवळच होते. तिथून पुस्तकं आणून मी वाचत असे. नातेवाईकांकडे गेलं की त्यांच्याकडची पुस्तकं मी वाचत बसत असे. चण्यादाण्यांबरोबर, वाणसामानाबरोबर, इस्त्रीच्या कपड्यांबरोबर आलेले कागद मी वाचत असे. वाचन असेल तर व्याकरण आपोआप आत्मसात होतं. नंतरच्या काळात मुलांचा अभ्यास खूपच वाढल्यामुळे त्यांना अवांतर वाचन करायला वेळच मिळत नाही. ही परिस्थिती बदलली गेली पाहिजे.

आजी आणि तू, तुम्हा दोघींचा आवडता छंद?

आईला व मला नाटक व सिनेमा बघायची आवड होती.

तू शिक्षण करता करता नोकरी केलीस, मागे वळून बघताना तुला ह्या गोष्टीचा अभिमान वाट्तो की समाधान?

नोकरी करुन शिक्षण पार पाडता आलं ह्याचं अतीव समाधान वाटतं. फार चमकदार यश मिळालं नाही, पण एकही वर्ष वाया गेलं नाही हे विशेष...कारण तेव्हा अभ्यासाच्या शंकांचं निरसन करण्याची काहीच सोय नव्हती. शिवाय, शालेय शिक्षण मराठी माध्यमात झाल्यामुळे महाविद्यालयातलं इंग्लीश माध्यम जड गेलं.

नोकरी करत असतानाची तुझी धावपळ मला आठवते. पण त्यामुळेच आपली तब्येत चांगली राहीली असे तुझे म्हणणे असते. का गं?

नोकरीमुळे तब्येत चांगली राहिली हे अगदीच खरं आहे. सकाळ-संध्याकाळ मिळून मी १० जिने चढाय-उतरायची.

नोकरीमुळे तुला वाचन आणि रेडिओ वरची जुनी गाणी ऐकणं हे फारसं करता नाही आलं. स्वेच्छानिवृत्ती नंतर तू तुझी ही आवड जोपासलीस का?

स्वेच्छ्यानिवृत्तीनंतर वाचन व गाणी ऐकण्याची आवड थोडीफार पुरवता आली. पण पित्तप्रकृतीमुळे फार वेळ गाणी ऐकवायची नाही आणि पुस्तकंही वाचवायची नाहीत. आधी तब्येत चांगली होती तर वेळ नव्हता, नंतर वेळ आहे तर शरीरातला जोम कमी झाला‌. त्यामुळे आवड मर्यादित स्वरुपात जोपासता आली.

आई, तुझं अगाध वाचन, मराठी आणि इंग्रजी भाषेवर प्रभुत्व, भाषांतराचा दांडगा अनुभव ह्या सगळ्याचा माझ्यावरही खूप प्रभाव आहे. बघता क्षणी, व्याकरणातील चुका समजणं आणि ते सुधारल्याशिवाय पुढे जाता न येणं हे तुझ्याले गूण मी जसेच्या तसे घेतले आहेत. जणू हा माझा वारसा आहे! तुला काय वाटतं?

भाषेची आवड व अचुकतेचा आग्रह हे गुण मुळातच तुझ्याकडे आहेत. ते आम्हा दोघांकडून तुझ्यात आले आहेत.

"करून बघा , प्रयत्न करा, आधीच नाही म्हणू नका !" हे तुझे ब्रीदवाक्य. ह्याचा मला पदोपदी उपयोग होतो. माझ्यात हा विश्वास तूच निर्माण केला. तुझ्यात कोणी केला?

शेवटपर्यंत प्रयत्न करत रहाणं ही वृत्ती माझ्यात जन्मजातच असावी असं वाटतं. तसंच, आईचा आग्रही स्वभाव व अण्णांचा व्यवस्थितपणा हे गुणही माझ्यात आले आहेत. मला ह्याचाही फार आनंद वाटतो.

आई, तू माझा रीतसर अभ्यास तर घेतलास पण येता जाता तू वाचलेलं जे जे मला सांगितलं ते अजूनही आठवतं! हे नकळत अभ्यास करून घेणं तुलाच जमू शकतं.

"पाव भाजी, छोले कराच पण रोजचा स्वयंपाक आलाच पाहिजे". हे मला जुन्या काळातले विचार वाटायचे. पण लॉक डाऊन च्या काळात मला ह्याचा प्रत्यय आला. त्याबद्दल खरंच खरंच धन्यवाद!! 

मागे वळून न बघता कायम पुढे चालत राहणं, ही तुझी सुंदर शिकवण मी अमलात आणायचा प्रयत्न करते पण तू हे खरोखरच जगलीस! छान!! मला अभिमान आहे मी तुझी मुलगी असण्याचा!!

Review:

One of the first books on Self Help and Improvement through Journaling which I have come across is "Happiness Comes in Threes" by Dan Gabrati.

The book serves as an introspection for every individual. It helps us to identify our true self through examples and small set of "to-do" exercises. 

The author takes us on a smooth journey of identification, analysis and solutioning of our perceived self. In this book, Dan Gabrati has provided us with a step-by-step framework to identify self-defeating behaviour, overcome our fears, emotional imbalance and live a happy and contented life. The journaling method used here is truly praiseworthy.

The author expounds the three pillars of happiness as follows:

1) A healthy body and a mind

2) Moments or conversations (with self or loved ones)

3) Positivity

Some of the "To Do" exercises for us are:

👉Goal Setting and their analysis w.r.t. achievement / non fulfilment
👉Identification of pains
👉Dealing with fear
👉Overcoming of rejections and anxiety, emotional imbalances
👉Exploring of new opportunities

All throughout the book, the exercises provide us with motivation and acceptance of our existing self, forgiveness for others by freeing ourselves from anger and resentment.

On a personal note, I really like the revelation that "Acceptance does not mean defeat, it means Move On"

In due course of reading and journeying with this book, we discover our thoughts, fears, emotions, problems and also conclude everything with a strong solution.

The exercises and questions at the end of every chapter are excellent tools of self discovery and self improvement.

The book is especially recommended for all those who are feeling low at most times in their life and need a constant dose of motivation!

How long have you been blogging? Tell us more about the idea behind "The Book Satchel"

The Book Satchel has been live since Dec, 2015. I was at a stressful time in my life and wanted an outlet for creative and bookish thoughts.

What genres of books do you generally follow and review?

I am a mixed bag. I enjoy a scary dystopian read as much as a pacy thriller or a literary read. I have a soft corner for magical realism. And I love a book that entertains.

According to you, what makes a good book? The plot or the author?

I try not to associate the person who wrote the book to the characters in the book. A book stands out by its plot, characters, language or structure. In short, a book should move the reader in some way.

How does a certain book achieve its "Best Seller" status? Also what are your tips to newbies in the Book Writing Platform?

My only tip is to keep writing until you find your voice.

How much time does it generally take from receiving a book to posting its review? What is the general flow that you follow?

It depends on the book in question. I don't have a strict flow. I will usually jot down what works for me in the book and what doesn't, and then elaborate.

In this scenario of information overload and binge reading habits, your blogging and Instagram posts have opened up a new avenue for book enthusiasts. What is your message for like minded people?

Do what you like and what you have the time for. You are still a reader if you read but don't post on social media. But if you enjoy posting on socials, you definitely should.

What advice would you share for naïve book bloggers?

Keep writing without being discouraged by view counts.

How many books do you read in a month? And how many are on your shelf right now as TBR?

I have no idea to be honest. I am a moody reader. So the number of books read can vary from 10+ to 1. As for TBR, it is never ending.

Any three books which are very close to your heart and why?

I enjoyed Arundhati Roy's God of small things for the beautiful prose, Normal people by Sally Rooney for the way it cast a spell over me, Stay with me by Ayọ̀bámi Adébáyọ̀ for the storytelling.

Has it ever happened that you felt as if you were one of the characters in the book? Which was that book?

Not really. But I've definitely been moved by the characters in books, whether or not I feel a personal connection. A recent book that comes to mind is Sorrow and Bliss by Meg Mason.

Do your family / friends support you in this venture of book blogging?

Yes, I guess.

What’s your preferred medium to discuss books – your blog, Twitter or Instagram?

I like them all for different reasons—Instagram for the photos and captions, Twitter for the brevity, and the blog for longer content.

What tips would you share for getting more likes / followers on Instagram handles for book reviews?

No tips to be honest. Be consistent and engage with the bookish community to build relationships.

Social Media is ever evolving. How do you adapt yourself to this scenario?

I wouldn't say I have adapted well.

Do you think likes / reviews on Instagram handles has a deep impact on the psychology of the readers?

I don't know. We can't really forget the fact that a 'like' on Instagram is not for the book, but for the photo, and to a smaller degree, the caption. An amazing book can receive smaller number of likes. As for popular books, the algorithm definitely aids them and they gain more visibility, and hence more engagement.

What are your favourite Bookstagram accounts?

I follow many lovely bookstagram accounts and it is difficult to choose a few.

Who inspired you to Book Blogging?

It was more of a spontaneous decision than an inspired one. But of course, over the years I have been inspired by many contemporary bloggers.
