Book Review #20: The Comfort Zone: Create a Life You Really Love with Less Stress and More Flow by Kristen Butler and Hay House

In her empowering book, "The Comfort Zone: Create a Life You Really Love with Less Stress and More Flow," Kristen Butler challenges the widely held belief that stepping out of one's comfort zone is the sole path to personal growth and fulfilment. Instead, she presents a counterintuitive yet compelling argument that embracing and expanding your comfort zone is the key to unlocking your true potential and designing a life that aligns with your deepest desires.

Butler's approach is rooted in the understanding that the comfort zone is not a place of stagnation or complacency, but rather a foundation of security and self-acceptance from which growth can flourish organically. She guides readers through a process of self-discovery, encouraging them to identify their comfort zones, understand their underlying values, and cultivate a mindset of positivity and self-compassion.

Unlike traditional self-help books that emphasize pushing boundaries and stepping into fear, "The Comfort Zone" advocates for a gentler, more sustainable approach to personal transformation. Butler emphasizes the importance of creating a thriving comfort zone, one that nurtures your well-being, creativity, and resilience. From this place of inner peace, you can then gradually expand your boundaries, exploring new possibilities with a sense of confidence and ease.

The book is filled with practical tools and exercises that readers can apply to their daily lives, including:

  • Identifying your personal comfort zones
  • Recognizing your core values and beliefs
  • Practicing self-compassion and self-acceptance
  • Cultivating a positive mindset
  • Creating a vision for your ideal life
  • Expanding your comfort zone in a gradual and sustainable manner

"The Comfort Zone" is a refreshing and empowering read that challenges conventional wisdom about personal growth. Butler's message is one of hope, encouragement, and self-belief, empowering readers to create a life of fulfilment and joy, not through struggle and sacrifice, but through embracing their comfort zone and expanding it from a place of inner strength and resilience.

The story revolves around Meshak, a young boy abandoned at the Foundling Hospital, a place established to care for deserted children.

He dreams of a better life, one where he can escape the confines of the hospital and forge his own destiny.

When Meshak encounters the Coram Man, a cunning and unscrupulous character who exploits the vulnerable, he is drawn into a web of deceit and danger. The Coram Man promises Meshak a life of freedom and adventure, but his true intentions are far more sinister.

Book Review #16: The Motorcycle Diaries by Ernesto "Che" Guevara

The Motorcycle Diaries is a travel memoir by Ernesto "Che" Guevara, written while he was a medical student at the University of Buenos Aires. The book chronicles his 1952 journey through South America with his friend Alberto Granado on a dilapidated 1939 Norton 500 motorcycle, nicknamed "La Poderosa" ("The Powerful One").

The book is divided into two parts. The first part is a series of letters Guevara wrote to his family and friends while on the road. The second part is a more reflective account of his journey, written after he returned to Argentina.

In his letters, Guevara describes the beauty and poverty of South America. He is particularly struck by the plight of the indigenous peoples, who are often exploited and marginalized. He also writes about his own personal growth, as he learns to appreciate the simple things in life and to challenge his own prejudices.

The second part of the book is more philosophical, as Guevara reflects on the meaning of life and the importance of social justice. He is critical of the United States and its influence on Latin America. He also discusses his own political beliefs, which are becoming increasingly radical.

The Motorcycle Diaries is a classic of travel literature. It is a well-written and insightful account of a young man's journey of discovery. Guevara's writing is both humorous and thought-provoking, and he provides a unique perspective on South America in the 1950s.

The book has been praised for its honesty and its depiction of Guevara's transformation from a carefree student into a revolutionary leader. It has also been criticized for its portrayal of Guevara's elitism and his lack of compassion for the poor.

Despite its critics, The Motorcycle Diaries remains a popular and influential book. It has been translated into over 20 languages and has been adapted into a feature film. The book is a must-read for anyone interested in travel literature, Latin American history, or the life of Ernesto "Che" Guevara.

Here are some of the things that make The Motorcycle Diaries a great book:

  • Guevara's writing is engaging and insightful. He is a keen observer of the world around him, and he has a knack for capturing the essence of a place or a people in just a few words.
  • The book is full of adventure and excitement. Guevara and Granado's journey is a thrilling one, and they encounter many challenges and setbacks along the way.
  • The book is a valuable historical document. It provides a firsthand account of South America in the early 1950s, a time of great social and political upheaval.

Overall, The Motorcycle Diaries is a highly recommended book. It is a must-read for anyone interested in travel, history, or politics.

Here are some quotes from the book:

  • "The roads are my home. The roads are my country."
  • "The only thing more dangerous than traveling is not traveling at all."
  • "To travel is to live."

Book Review #15: Night in Shining Armour by Manali Desai

Title : Night in Shining Armour
Author : Manali Desai
Copyright: 2023
Language: English
Format : Kindle Edition
Pages : 84

Genre: Poetry

Shelving Location: Poetry / English

Dewey Decimal Classification: 808

Writing Style: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Narration: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Cover/Title: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Concept: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Ratings : ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The book - Night in Shining Armour by Manali Desai is a collection of 55 poems painting the canvas of the charisma of the night which follows the day. This collection is divided into two themes viz. Facets and Pursuits.
Facets reflect the starry sky, the phases of the moon (referred to as the dancing moon) and all the stellar and ethereal elements.
Pursuits captures the essence of all the nocturnal activities such as reading, writing, dancing, stargazing and falling in love.
The USP of this book is that they have apt references to relatable Hindi and English songs - a feature which I found as quite novel. There are also Video renditions and links to few poems throughout the book.
Although I am quite new to reading poetry books and this happens to be my first review for a poetry book, I am more than happy to mention that Manali has very beautifully managed to keep me engaged throughout the book reading. I could finish the book in one go.
The book has portrayed many unspoken emotions of loneliness, friendship, smell in the form of free verse. My personal favourite are "Not Alone", "The Light at the End of the Tunnel", "Readalong" and "Jasmine" and they truly left me feeling nostalgic.
In short, the book is a collection of heart-warming poetry and prose intertwined to create a beautiful literary read.
The title of the book - Night in Shining Armour truly captures the essence of the underlying idiom - Knight in Shining Armour.
Buy the book on Amazon.

P.S.: I have received a free e-copy (Kindle version) of the book from the author.

Summary from Pothi.com

The Kabir Sharma story continues as the little boy with the big dream enters the big world. Fame, glory, money and respect are on his feet as Kabir has now gained confidence to take on his biggest enemy of the past, Dhanraj Kapoor. More powerful than before and growing stronger every minute, Kapoor is backed by a powerful syndicate from behind the scenes.

But will he be successful, or become another name in the list of people who failed trying to make a difference? Or will winning cost him a price that no one wants to pay when he starts playing the game behind the curtains?

Review:

Kabir Sharma: Let the Games Begin by Ruthwik S M is an exiting read about precarious relationships, the glamour of cricket and the rankling mystery surrounding these two elements.
The story goes forward from its prequel - Kabir Sharma and the Big Dream where Kabir has gone missing and assumed dead albeit suspiciously. The plot revolves around Kabir - the protagonist and his boundless love for the game of Cricket. A rich (by money and power) person - DK enters Kabir's life and the latter's dreams are shattered when he comes to know the stark reality of this big and charismatic game. But Kabir as we know him emerges more stronger than ever by all means. Now he has fame, money and power all at his feet. He has tasted victory at every game he has ever played - be it the sport or the real life. Harrowing experiences always fail to deter him from his single goal of expelling DK and his allies from his love - Cricket. DK proves him wrong all the time. Suddenly, things turn around and the puzzle pieces fit together one by one unraveling the mystery. Conspiracies boomerang but DK is prepared too and ready to retaliate.
Who will win ultimately? Kabir or DK? And if Kabir wins, what is the cost he has to pay for it - his passion or his childhood love? Read the book to find out.
Buy the book on Amazon.
I loved the plot. It's full of surprises. Firstly, the author - Ruthwik S M has used simple and yet interesting language with which one can easily connect. It is a short book which can be finished reading in a single seating. I liked the portrayal of relationships of love and friendships. The author has narrated the scenes very lucidly. The equation between Kabir and his female friends - Alisha, Jasmine and Riya is quite evolving. The pace and the tempo is good. The writing style is captivating.
The book is for teenagers or young Cricket lovers.

Note: I have received a free copy of the book from the author.

Marginally Human: A Heart Pumping Adventure

Aaxyl and Aameh investigate unsolved kidnappings happening in the 25th century. Telepathic symbionts has resulted in increased immortality. An article on the unexplained missing of many persons intrigues Aameh and she is adamant on finding out more details. Curious as she is, she applies for a job in NUll Dorms. She zeroes in on D4F2. A spat of events follow taking the curious reader to the next level of adrenaline rush.

The book - Marginally Human is a page turner from the first sentence itself. Teleporting, symbionts, telepathy paramedics are discussed in a very novel manner. Marginally Human sets its tone in the Indian context with unexpected twists and turns.

It is a Sci-Fi novel which builds a story around Aaxyl, Aameh and Hirsh. The plot and the narration are completely different. The description of the characters and the flow of the story is lucid. Many characters are weaved together in this storyline. It is an engrossing read that you will enjoy if you love Sci-Fi. Don't miss it!

The book has some tricky plots and at some points, needs a re-read to pacify our understanding of the story. I personally liked the sentence - "Blink if you understand me."

Review:

Jaratkaru: An Untold Story of First Genocide of Aryawarta by Dr. Priya Dandage is a captivating narration which has explored an untrodden story from Indian Mythology. The book vividly revolves around the themes of responsibilities, sacrifices, vengeance, dutifulness. Jaratkaru is both intriguing and empowering. She is the epitome of love and sacrifice - not for a person but for her clan. She places responsibility before selfishness and ego.

Ancient Indian History has created epics such as  The Ramayan and The Mahabharat. From time immemorial, Indians have grown up listening to the stories of these legends. Ramanyan is known to instil in us the values of respect and sacrifice while Mahabharat teaches us the Ideals of life.

After reading "The Shiva Trilogy" and "Ramchandra Series" by Amish Tripathi, I was on the lookout for a similar historical read. Thanks to the author - Dr. Priya Dandage, I am totally mesmerized by her book - Jaratkaru - an untold story of first genocide of Aryawarta.

Naga King Takshaka vowed to avenge the inferno triggered by Arjuna. He poisoned Arjuna's grandson - Parikshit. Parikshit's son - Janmajeya swore to kill the entire Naga clan from Aryawarta. The book narrates these and many unknown incidences in a very captivating manner. The resultant conflicts see a future of extinction. At a point, where there seems no hope of saving the Naga clan, comes forward Jaratkaru - the princess and the sister of King Vasuki. The princess is deeply in love with Prabhasa. however, destiny and King Vasuki have planned something else for her.

What will Jaratkaru do now? Will she be able to forget the love of her life or will she be dutiful toward her clan and responsibilities?

The book is written in a very lucid and flowing language by Dr. Priya Dandage. The story is intertwined with many different characters and yet there is no thread which is left loose. The characters, the landscape and our ancient history has been marvellously depicted and narrated by the author.

Jaratkaru is a fascinating and thought provoking read which reiterates the adage - "With Great Power comes Great Responsibility."

Review:

One of the first books on Self Help and Improvement through Journaling which I have come across is "Happiness Comes in Threes" by Dan Gabrati.

The book serves as an introspection for every individual. It helps us to identify our true self through examples and small set of "to-do" exercises.

The author takes us on a smooth journey of identification, analysis and solutioning of our perceived self. In this book, Dan Gabrati has provided us with a step-by-step framework to identify self-defeating behaviour, overcome our fears, emotional imbalance and live a happy and contented life. The journaling method used here is truly praiseworthy.

The author expounds the three pillars of happiness as follows:

1) A healthy body and a mind

2) Moments or conversations (with self or loved ones)

3) Positivity

Some of the "To Do" exercises for us are:

👉Goal Setting and their analysis w.r.t. achievement / non fulfilment
👉Identification of pains
👉Dealing with fear
👉Overcoming of rejections and anxiety, emotional imbalances
👉Exploring of new opportunities

All throughout the book, the exercises provide us with motivation and acceptance of our existing self, forgiveness for others by freeing ourselves from anger and resentment.

On a personal note, I really like the revelation that "Acceptance does not mean defeat, it means Move On"

In due course of reading and journeying with this book, we discover our thoughts, fears, emotions, problems and also conclude everything with a strong solution.

The exercises and questions at the end of every chapter are excellent tools of self discovery and self improvement.

The book is especially recommended for all those who are feeling low at most times in their life and need a constant dose of motivation!

Resh Susan: Keep writing until you find your voice

Resh Susan or @thebooksatchel dwelled into journaling as a hobby way back in the year 2015. Her website and book reviews are an absolute treat to the eyes. Her posts are captivating. Hats off to her photography and the props!

Trust me, her website and Instagram handle are actually a "Satchel" - a mixed bag of reviews, pictures and her notes which simply add to the beauty of her writings.

Chinmayee Bhange interviews Ms. Resh Susan on the occasion of "Write a Review Day" which is celebrated on May 3.

Please tell us more about yourself.

Hi, I am Resh Susan. I run The Book Satchel (https://www.thebooksatchel.com/)and a monthly newsletter Satchel Notes (https://reshsusan.substack.com/)

How long have you been blogging? Tell us more about the idea behind "The Book Satchel"

The Book Satchel has been live since Dec, 2015. I was at a stressful time in my life and wanted an outlet for creative and bookish thoughts.

What genres of books do you generally follow and review?

I am a mixed bag. I enjoy a scary dystopian read as much as a pacy thriller or a literary read. I have a soft corner for magical realism. And I love a book that entertains.

According to you, what makes a good book? The plot or the author?

I try not to associate the person who wrote the book to the characters in the book. A book stands out by its plot, characters, language or structure. In short, a book should move the reader in some way.

How does a certain book achieve its "Best Seller" status? Also what are your tips to newbies in the Book Writing Platform?

My only tip is to keep writing until you find your voice.

How much time does it generally take from receiving a book to posting its review? What is the general flow that you follow?

It depends on the book in question. I don't have a strict flow. I will usually jot down what works for me in the book and what doesn't, and then elaborate.

In this scenario of information overload and binge reading habits, your blogging and Instagram posts have opened up a new avenue for book enthusiasts. What is your message for like minded people?

Do what you like and what you have the time for. You are still a reader if you read but don't post on social media. But if you enjoy posting on socials, you definitely should.

What advice would you share for naïve book bloggers?

Keep writing without being discouraged by view counts.

How many books do you read in a month? And how many are on your shelf right now as TBR?

I have no idea to be honest. I am a moody reader. So the number of books read can vary from 10+ to 1. As for TBR, it is never ending.

Any three books which are very close to your heart and why?

I enjoyed Arundhati Roy's God of small things for the beautiful prose, Normal people by Sally Rooney for the way it cast a spell over me, Stay with me by Ayọ̀bámi Adébáyọ̀ for the storytelling.

Has it ever happened that you felt as if you were one of the characters in the book? Which was that book?

Not really. But I've definitely been moved by the characters in books, whether or not I feel a personal connection. A recent book that comes to mind is Sorrow and Bliss by Meg Mason.

Do your family / friends support you in this venture of book blogging?

Yes, I guess.

What’s your preferred medium to discuss books – your blog, Twitter or Instagram?

I like them all for different reasons—Instagram for the photos and captions, Twitter for the brevity, and the blog for longer content.

What tips would you share for getting more likes / followers on Instagram handles for book reviews?

No tips to be honest. Be consistent and engage with the bookish community to build relationships.

Social Media is ever evolving. How do you adapt yourself to this scenario?

I wouldn't say I have adapted well.

Do you think likes / reviews on Instagram handles has a deep impact on the psychology of the readers?

I don't know. We can't really forget the fact that a 'like' on Instagram is not for the book, but for the photo, and to a smaller degree, the caption. An amazing book can receive smaller number of likes. As for popular books, the algorithm definitely aids them and they gain more visibility, and hence more engagement.

What are your favourite Bookstagram accounts?

I follow many lovely bookstagram accounts and it is difficult to choose a few.

Who inspired you to Book Blogging?

It was more of a spontaneous decision than an inspired one. But of course, over the years I have been inspired by many contemporary bloggers.
